Anti-Bacterial Hand Gel Recipe

Come learn how to make your own hand sanitizer and you might find it really handy on those days when when the public toilets run out of hand wash gels! This formula contains ~30% aloe vera gel to help ensure that your skin gets enough moisture while the alcohol is zapping microbes away....

Directions of use: As a general rule of thumb, hand sanitizers should be used only when there is no proper hand wash facility. To use, apply a generous amount on the palms. Then rub the gel over the palms, fingers, back of hands and wrists. Tissue off or allow gel to dry off naturally.

Pre-caution: Mix ingredients well before use. Do not apply on eyes. If mixture gets into the eye, rinse gently with water.

Materials to make a 100 ml hand sanitizer bottle:

  • 70 ml of alcohol diluted to 70-75% strength | Tip: You can buy 95% alcohol solution from the store and dilute to 70% by adding ~25 ml distilled water to 45 ml of alcohol to get a 70ml of 70% alcohol
  • 100 ml distilled water
  • 40 drops of essential oils (eg tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, grapefruit or lavender)
  • 28 ml aloe vera gel | You may want to use the gel of your own plant but do note that the unprocessed mixture may expire faster than store-bought gel
  • 2 plastic 100 ml bottles with pump
  • Measuring cup

     Instructions:

    1. Measure out 70 ml of the alcohol.
    2. Add in 20 drops each type of essential oil and mix well. Tea tree would be a good choice for this purpose as it is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
    3. Finally add 28 ml of aloe vera gel into the mixture.
    4. Transfer the mixture into your bottle pump.
    5. Store in a cool place when not in use. The mixture should be able to keep up to 6 months.
