Cocoa Butter Lip Balm Recipe

If your lips are dry and flaky, try making your own balms. These balms will help keep your lips hydrated by creating a protective barrier which seal in moisture and heal deep cracks and splits from infection and irritation. You can add flavors to your creation, choosing honey or non-phototoxic essential oils. There is also the option of cosmetic grade lip flavors specially made for lip balms in the market.

Precaution: Certain essential oils are phototoxic and may cause skin tanning when exposed to sunlight. Some of these essential oils include (but are not limited to) orange, mandarin, tangerine, petitgrain, bergamot, grapefruit and lemon. Therefore avoid adding them to your lip balm recipe.

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. Melt the beeswax slowly by double boiling it. This method will ensure that the beeswax do not become overheated or scorched. Alternatively you can also use the microwave by heating up the beeswax in low temperature and taking it out every 25-35 seconds to stir.
  2. When the beeswax has melted, add in cocoa butter and sweet almond oil to the beeswax. Stir well until evenly mixed.
  3. Add in vitamin E and honey to the mixture to make the lip balm more moisturizing.
  4. Add in desired essential oils or lip balm flavors. They should weigh ~0.5%-2% of the total lip balm weight.
  5. Stir the mixture and pour into lip balm containers. This step needs to be performed quickly as the mixture will harden when it cools. Heat the mixture again if it has hardened.
  6. Allow the mixture to cool completely before placing the caps onto your lip balm containers.
  7. The lip balm is ready to use. Now you can decorate the lip balm containers if they are to be given away as gifts!
