Botanical Name: Eugenia caryophyllata

Plant Part: Buds

Extraction Method: Steam Distilled

Common Uses:

Clove essential oil is a spicy, warming oil that has been known to be a great antiseptic and has traditionally been used to relieve symptoms of cough, cold and flu.

Clove Oil is also known for its benefits in dental applications. It is often recommended for use with dental pain and is often incorporated into commercial tooth paste and mouth gargles.

The high eugenol content in this oil imparts stimulating and warming properties, making it a popular choice in blends to improve circulation, regulate body temperature, stimulate immune system and also counter mental exhaustion.

Studies on the antioxidant properties of essential oils have shown that thyme has the greatest effect, followed by clove and cinnamon. By virtue of eugenol which is its main constituent with anti-oxidant properties, clove oil can be considered for inclusion into blends to provide relief for inflammation caused by free radicals. However, as eugenol is potentially sensitising, it is recommended that clove oil should not exceed 0.5% dilution in a blend.

Blending suggestions:

  • Musculoskeletal (inflammation, arthritis, pain): consider blending with lavender, clary sage, geranium, bergamot, ylang ylang, coriander seed, wintergreen
  • Immune (for prevention of infection, debility or maintaining wellbeing): consider blending with patchouli, ginger, lemongrass, palmarosa
  • Skin (for topical infection including candida infections): consider blending with lavender, rosemary, coriander seed
  • Psyche (mental exhaustion and relaxation): orange, lemon, ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, patchouli
