Citric acid is a member of the alpha hydroxy acid family (AHA) and is a natural antioxidant. It can help stimulate collagen production, reduce activity of free radicals and break down bonds between dead and living skin cells, causing the older dead cells to be shed. Hence it is often added in products to help fight fine lines, wrinkles, scars and skin discoloration. By removing the dead cells that often clog the pores, citric acid may also be helpful on acne or enlarged pores.
Citric acid also has properties to kill bacteria, mold and mildew. It can be used to disinfect and clean the household, remove soap scum and hard water stains.
